Gibbs isn’t a realistic workhorse candidate at 199 pounds, and his carry count is likely to rank low among the top fantasy backs as a result, but the Alabama product is a unique threat as a receiver and could immediately establish himself as one of the best pass-catching backs of recent memory and distant future. With a 4.36-second 40-yard dash, Gibbs also has long-range speed to make big plays in space. He turned 134 collegiate targets into 104 receptions for 1,217 yards, good for a catch rate of 77.6 percent at 9.1 yards per target. You simply don’t see that level of pass-catching efficiency over that amount of volume for a college RB. The Lions thought enough of Gibbs to draft him at 12th overall after trading down, later trading veteran RB D’Andre Swift to Philadelphia. They signed David Montgomery earlier in the offseason to replace Jamaal Williams, but Montgomery mostly figures to get the type of touches (short-yardage, between the tackles) that Gibbs isn’t best suited for anyway. The Lions seem to view Gibbs/Montgomery as an upgraded version of the Swift/Williams duo that combined for 2,070 scrimmage yards and 25 TDs in 2022.
